The football whistles through the air, gliding to the open receiver in the back of the endzone. Groton’s star quarterback, Sean Greene ’24, celebrates with his teammates as he leads a thrilling comeback win. Sean helped the Zebras to a fourth-place finish in the Independent School League and is looking to do the same on the hardwood this winter. Sean’s impact on his teams is noticeable on the scoreboard, such as the one displaying a 33–0 football victory against St. Mark’s or helping Groton basketball win the Winter Tournament this year. Where Sean separates himself is his leadership off and on the field. A captain on both the varsity football and basketball teams, Sean leads through his actions. As his Groton sports career comes to a close, he reflects on his years here:
What are your favorite memories from Groton football?
Wow, there’s so many to choose from. I guess if I had to choose one, it would be this year. We had our big game against Brooks to start the year. We kept fighting throughout the game and came away with a 14–13 victory, which started off the year on a great foot, especially on our home turf against our rival.
What inspired you to play football and basketball?
Growing up, I had two older brothers and saw them playing football, as well as basketball. So that’s really what drew my passion towards wanting to play in high school.
How do sports at Groton differ from sports elsewhere?
I would say being at three different high schools throughout my high school career specifically, you really get a sense of community with sports at Groton. Just such a tight-knit community in the athletics realm. Compared to other schools and other environments, there’s such a sense of sacrifice and a sense of just love for the guy next to you that I’ve had on every team I’ve played on Groton.
What are you most excited about in the upcoming basketball season?
What I’m really excited for specifically with this team that we have is how we’re able to bounce back and come out with a successful year with a lot of young guys. And I think it’s an exciting role for me, specifically as captain and doing my best as a second-year player in the Groton basketball program to create a good environment for them. Trying to be a good role model as well as just continue motivating them and getting them better, as well as the rest of the team.
What does it mean to be a Groton football and basketball captain?
It’s been a special experience, especially in football, so far having a full season of being a captain. It was really fun being able to bring everybody together, trying to inspire them the best I can and lead by example.
Do you plan to continue sports in college?
I definitely do. Depending on the school, I think it would be fun to try to play football and basketball, but the main school sport I’m going for is football.
