The weather is warmer, the flowers are blossoming, and the birds are chirping again. The stage is set for Groton athletes to spring into action. From dominant performances to nail-biting matches, the start of the spring season has not disappointed.
Girls Varsity Tennis
The team’s first opponent was no easy match as girls varsity tennis faced off against the defending NEPSAC Class A champion, Phillips Andover. Despite their formidable competition, the girls were determined to emerge triumphant, delivering a thrilling 5–4 win. This victory made them Groton’s first-ever girls varsity tennis team to beat Andover. Girls varsity tennis then followed up their historical performance by defeating Deerfield in a decisive 8–1 victory. Lindy Zhang ’25 says, “It feels great to have two consecutive wins against the top teams of New England!” Continuing their momentum, the squad swept both Governor’s and St. Paul’s with 9–0 matches. Poised to defend their ISL Champions title, girls varsity tennis remains undefeated with a 4–0 record.
Boys Varsity Tennis
Welcoming new talent into the team, boys varsity tennis put their skill on display against Deerfield and Exeter for their first two matches. They dominated Deerfield 6–1 and clinched the Exeter victory with a final score of 4–3. Captain and first-seeded Trip Wight ’25 thought the Exeter win was “a great start for the team . . . it establishes a culture of teamwork and an emphasis on success.” After their Exeter match, the boys were off to play in the Kingswood-Oxford Tournament, where they extended their winning streak by taking home first place for the fifth time in a row. This year, the team took Trip (#1), Griffin Gura ’24 (#2), Michael Lu ’24 (#3), and Samuel Lu ’27 (#4). Trip felt that the tournament success “brought him closer to his teammates and gave them confidence for the rest of the season.” Indeed, their confidence grew, as they have swept every team since. Now, boys varsity tennis boasts a 6–0 record to start the season off.
Varsity Track
Hitting the ground running, the track team has broken school record after school record. Liam Warren ’25 broke both the triple jump and pole vault records, and Alicia Ye ’25 set new marks in the 100 meters and 200 meters. The buzz around the new track and field complex does not disappoint either. Housing long jump, triple jump, pole vault, high jump, discus, shot put, and of course, the track, the Vuyelwa and Temba Maqubela Track and Field Complex provides state-of-the-art facilities Groton athletes can enjoy. Chase Bellamy ’26 says that “having a track at the school allows friends and teachers to spectate,” an experience the track team has not had until now. An added benefit,Chase comments,to home facilities, is that the team no longer needs to spend practice time “driving to and from Harvard and having to haul the equipment on and off the toasters.” With the addition of the new track to the Groton campus, Chase is “looking forward to seeing our team’s improvement throughout the season and utilizing the track to do the best we can.”
