As the years roll by and Groton continues to witness numerous athletic contests, a long history of unforgettable moments has emerged—moments that transcend the results and echo through the halls long after the final whistle.
The games of 23-24, whether marked by a comeback that defied the odds or moments that stunned the crowd, have become woven into the fabric of Groton’s legacy.
A Thriller Under the Lights
Last fall, Groton’s Boys Varsity Soccer team seized the opportunity to showcase their hard work against Brooks, captivating hundreds of fans and family members. The atmosphere was exhilarating, filled with enthusiastic chants, spirited celebrations, and dazzling “Roll Zeebs” T-shirts, fueling the anticipation for the match ahead.
The game unfolded with an exciting back-and-forth, requiring the team to work symbiotically. As the second half progressed, the stakes intensified, including the pride for Groton and its passionate supporters. Determined, the boys put everything on the field and came out victorious.
Leo Serodio ’24—who scored two goals and is now a standout striker at Carnegie Mellon University—reflects fondly on this game.
“It was electric,” he recalls, “and I still catch myself thinking about it to this day.”
The spectacle of Leo’s performance, along with the effort of everyone there, resulting in a 5–4 win for Groton, continues to be remembered as a hallmark of Groton’s spirit.
Triumph on the Rink
Along with many huge upsets last winter, Girls Varsity Ice Hockey joined the ranks after winning a huge game against Milbrooks in the ISL semifinals. Earlier that season, Millbrook beat the girls 4-1 in the finals of the Cushing Holiday Tournament. The previous year’s heartbreaking defeat to New Hampton in the championship still lingered, but this time, Groton was prepared and determined to rewrite the ending.
Captain and Colgate commit Madison Cronan reflected,
“We were better than ever and on the hunt for a championship. We prepared well together, getting hyped in the locker room, knowing that playing this game was do-or-die.”
The game’s intensity was instantly noticeable after Maddie scored the first goal in a matter of minutes. Stands were packed with support from the staff, faculty, and parents, giving the girls motivation to play one of their best games yet. Groton’s strong offensive zone was buzzing with one goal after another and each roar from the stands louder than the other. The last goal of the game was scored by Groton, resulting in a 5-2 victory over Millbrook and a spot in the finals.
A Remarkable Upset on the Diamond
Reigning ISL champions Belmont Hill faced Groton this past spring and expected a straightforward victory. Despite a recent loss, Groton hoped for a victory to boost their playoff chances and saw the game as a chance to prove themselves against a strong squad of Division I commits.
“They have been circled on our schedule since day one,” Groton outfielder Nikhil Luthra ’27 said. “Ever since I arrived at Groton, the prospect of a home game against a powerhouse like Belmont Hill has been on my mind.”
As the Groton 9 took the field, Zack Webber ’24 delivered a strong outing, but Belmont Hill quickly jumped ahead 2–0. Groton struggled offensively until the seventh, when Forrest Nelson ’24 led off with a triple, forcing Belmont Hill’s coach to call in a reliever. With the momentum finally in their favor, the Zebras capitalized on the opportunity and rallied for a comeback, winning the game and defying all odds stacked against them.
