The Olympics is a magical site to see, and the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics did not fail to make an impression. Filled with electrifying moments and incredible displays of athleticism, this Olympics was one of the most iconic yet, but what truly captivated me was the intricate work behind the scenes, where I had the opportunity to intern at a pop-up restaurant in Paris operated by the Coca-Cola Company, sponsored by the Olympics.
Behind the scenes of the 32 sporting events is an immense amount of planning and organization to contribute to both the support of the athletes and the enjoyment of the spectators. The athletes are the ones that take the big screens; however, there are other stars that are often overlooked. The 2024 Paris Olympics was a colossal endeavor that engaged more than 200,000 personnel, 80,000 of which were volunteers. These individuals coming from various walks of life were the unsung heroes of this global sporting event. The team behind the scenes offered to work long hours for free, enabling spectators to have a nice and enjoyable time. Some of these volunteers often had to work in chaotic, stressful situations, such as managing logistics in crowded areas, often without the glamor of athletes. The sheer number of volunteers is evidence of the collective spirit that the Olympics, unlike any other event, brings.
Working as a cashier, I met many people from countries like Peru, China, and Brazil, allowing me to practice communicating with others in different languages. Meeting such a wide array of people gave me a comprehensive understanding of their admiration of the Olympics and how their cultures influenced the sports they excelled in. For example, I met a group of Brazilian fans who had been playing beach volleyball ever since they were kids and were overjoyed to be witnessing such a magnificent moment in person.
The Coca-Cola pop-up restaurant was filled with activity, with more than 3,000 customers constantly streaming in and out each day. The restaurant was an optimal gathering place for visitors because it included special events for athletes to show off their skills, creating a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere within the restaurant. It was fascinating to see how something as simple as a café could bring so many people together, transcending language barriers and cultural differences.
However, not everyone in Paris was thrilled about the Olympics. Many locals left the city to avoid the crowds and the disruptions that came with the event. The influx of visitors meant that the city was busier than ever, with traffic jams, packed public transportation, and long lines everywhere. Some Parisians felt that the city’s charm was overshadowed by the chaos of the Olympics, and they preferred to escape to quieter destinations.
Yet, for those who stayed, the Olympics was an unforgettable experience. The energy in the stadiums at each event was electric. Watching the world’s best athletes compete at the highest level was inspiring. There were moments of triumph and heartbreak, record-breaking performances, and unexpected upsets. These are the moments that make the Olympics so special. They remind us of the power of sports to bring people together and to inspire us to strive for greatness.
