This issue, The Circle Voice is reviving a beloved segment in the Features section: the faculty child spotlight. We are starting with Elizabeth “Biz” Machan, the second child and only daughter of Associate Director of College Counseling Mark Machan and Dean of Strategic Operations Kate Machan. Biz is eight years old and in the third grade at the Applewild School in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. She is an avid hockey and soccer player and, in her free time, enjoys playing with her friends, such as fellow faculty child Arden Bannard. I sat down with Biz for an interview and discovered some interesting truths about her experience at Groton School.
CV: How old are you?
B: Eighty-eight.
CV: You’re eighty-eight?
B: No, I’m eight. My hockey number is number eight, because Karenna [Beckstein ’23] was number eight.
CV: And you want to continue her legacy?
B: I wouldn’t call it a legacy, though.
CV: Well, what would you call it?
B: A number.
CV: What are your favorite things to do?
B: Annoy my dad. And play hockey.
CV: What are the things you do that annoy your dad the most?
B: Um, yell in his ear.
CV: What do you yell in his ear?
B: Like, “Hello!” when he’s talking to people too long, because he talks to people way too long.
CV: What music do you like?
B: Um, Taylor Swift.
CV: What’s your favorite Taylor Swift song?
B: Um, mmm, “Cruel Summer.”
CV: What are your dreams?
B: To be a famous hockey player.
CV: What’s something that you can’t live without?
B: Maggie, my dog.

CV: What’s your favorite book?
B: Mmmmmmmmmm, my dad.
CV: Is he a book?
B: Yeah, because he tells weird stories.
CV: Do you like living at Groton?
B: Yeah, because I get to annoy the kids.
CV: Do you want to go to school here? Why?
B: Yeah, because my friend might come here, Arden. The other one is to play hockey.
CV: Do you like your brother?
B: No, because he’s annoying, but I like to tackle him.
CV: Who wins when you tackle him?
B: Me, he’s a bad tackler.
CV: Do you like the Machan’s boys this year?
B: No, because I want a girls’ dorm.

B: [Biz pauses to think] My mom. I don’t think she’s a teacher, but oh well.
CV: What is your bedtime? Is it too early, too late, or just right?
B: Um . . . too early. It’s 9:30, I want to go to bed at 10:00. I go to bed at 10:00 on the weekends.
CV: What is your opinion on adults?
B: They can be bossy. My dad is very bossy.
CV: If you had five minutes with President Biden, what would you ask him?
B: Mm, can I be president?
CV: What would you do if you were president?
