Groton’s talented and hardworking athletes have trained over the summer, and four of them shared their experiences with us. Whether it’s playing with college and club teams or communicating with coaches for recruitment, these athletes are prepared for a great season.
Luke Romano ’23 Storms Into the Offseason
This summer, Luke and his longtime travel lacrosse club, the New Hampshire Tomahawks, drove across the East Coast to play in tournaments against other top-tier club teams. Luke was able to show his skill in front of collegiate coaches, which led him to recently commit to Union College. A defining summer and career moment was when he, playing as defense, sprinted down the field to score and watched the sidelines erupt. Now that club lacrosse is over, he feels thankful to everyone who has supported him through his journey, especially his teammates for making the summer so special.
Karenna Beckstein ’23 Gets In Form
Though her club team doesn’t usually compete over summer, Karenna kept working on her soccer game individually. On top of playing two games a week with a college summer league team, Karenna also did a lot of off-ball training to get in form. She focused on her fitness by doing long runs and speed drills, and seeing her work pay off in her mile times was a major highlight of her summer. Although her summer league team lost in the finals, the experience of working with college athletes gave her an opportunity to take her game to the next level. It’s clear that she is ready for both her final season at Groton and playing at Holy Cross the following year.
Jojo Sulmasy ’23 Is Nonstop
Basketball season may have ended in March, but Jojo has been working on her game tirelessly since. She’s been playing for her club basketball team, traveling to different cities to compete, and working on her individual skills and conditioning. Over the summer, she’s improved her confidence as a player, moving out of just playing her “role” on the court. Off the court, Jojo met with coaches during her recruitment process, and she is grateful for what she has learned and is excited to apply those skills on and off the court.
