During off season, Carrie ‘17 lifts more than books
Athletically speaking, Carrie Moore ’17 is known around the Circle as a soccer player, but few know the second sport she partakes in: Olympic weightlifting. When asked how she started the sport, Carrie said: “I worked out at my gym pretty regularly in order to stay in shape for soccer and my trainer asked if I wanted to try Olympic weightlifting because he knew I was a former gymnast,” referring to the fact that gymnasts and lifters have similar skill sets. “I decided to try it and ended up loving it.”
Carrie started Olympic weightlifting as an FSA in fifth form year during the Spring term. This year she is doing her Olympic Weightlifting FSA during the Winter term. Ms. Meyers has been her faculty sponsor for both terms. Carrie travels to Teamwork Sports Performance, a gym in Acton, MA three times each week. Carrie also goes to competitions where participants compete against peers in the same age and weight class. When asked about competing, Carrie said, “I compete once every couple months. This summer I traveled to Austin for Youth Nationals and placed 12th for my weight and age. Right now I’m training to qualify for Junior Nationals.”
Although she will be playing soccer at Emory University next fall, Carrie’s Olympic weightlifting career is not over. The Emory Women’s Soccer team does a lot of Olympic weightlifting to cross train. In addition, she plans to train at her gym and go to competitions when she comes home for breaks.
