Halloween Costumes at Groton: A Guide

As bats and skulls appear in the Schoolhouse Forum, students are turning their attention to the spookiest day of the year: Halloween. Although some teachers seem anxious about having a campus full of sugar-filled teenagers brandishing plastic swords and sporting facepaint, nothing can stop the student body’s excitement for October 31st. Already, costume ideas are beginning to buzz around the Schoolhouse. Here are some tips to consider when creating a costume:

First, determine a creation method. Costumes come in one of two styles: professional and home-made. Our advice: plan ahead! Costumes work best when people can recognize your outfit on the spot, and that often requires special pieces that simply cannot be drawn on with Sharpie in twenty-minutes. Hop onto Amazon or talk to friends and family now to avoid sticky situations later.

However, if you are confident in your artistic abilities, feel free to craft your own masterpiece. On the other hand, if you’re not so sure you can sew together a Spiderman suit ortime has simply gotten away from you, do not panic! Onesies, face paint or whatever is in your wardrobe can present you with an amazing outfit even with limited time. Never be afraid to ask for advice from your friends; it could simplify and expedite the process!

Similar to collecting your costume parts, get together with your friends and lay out your plans in advance if you are thinking about coordinating outfits. Remember costume details even if you’re attempting to organize a large group: it’s the little things that make an ensemble spectacular!

Secondly, keep your costumes practical. If you’re planning on dancing or trick-or-treating, make sure your costume keeps you comfortable and allows you to move. To keep yourself cool on the dance floor or warm on the streets, try making your costume in layers so that you can control your temperature.

Lastly– and most importantly–remember whatever you chose to wear will only bring the campus alive with the supernatural! Regardless of how quickly you threw together your outfit, or how hectic you were on the day of, Halloween 2016 will be a blast.
